As “Sportsageddon Carmageddon” looms with the World Series, USC football, and NBA action converging on the Harbor Freeway Friday night, will the usual Los Angeles evening rush hour finally meet its match? Despite the anticipated traffic headaches, an even bigger question emerges – can the Dodgers reclaim their championship glory against historic rivals, the New York Yankees? The 12th championship meeting between these storied franchises features a pitching duel between Southern California natives Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty in Game 1, with the Dodgers entering as slight -130 favorites.
The Dodgers have survived cycling through 18 starting pitchers in one season to reach the coveted NL spot in baseball’s biggest series, even as questions linger about Freddie Freeman’s ankle. But could Shohei Ohtani be the X-factor, especially with Yankee Stadium’s tempting short right-field porch awaiting his powerful swing? On the other side of the field, is this Aaron Judge’s moment to silence critics who question his postseason legacy after his historic 62-home run season? The series showcases multiple MVPs and two powerhouse teams with close season stats – the Yankees at 94-68 and the Dodgers at 98-64. These franchises have met in the World Series more times than any other two teams, with the Yankees winning eight of those titles. Will this matchup bring the Dodgers closer to evening up the ledger?
Has the NFL’s balance of power shifted? The Detroit Lions, sparked by Jared Goff’s stunning 80% completion rate, face uncertainty with Aidan Hutchinson sidelined. Can the San Francisco 49ers weather their storm of injuries, losing Brandon Aiyuk for the season while Deebo Samuel battles walking pneumonia and George Kittle remains questionable? The Los Angeles Rams might have found their answer, as Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua’s reunion brought instant chemistry with Matthew Stafford, rekindling hopes in the NFC West race. In Pittsburgh, did Mike Tomlin make the right call choosing Russell Wilson over Justin Fields? The decision looms large as the Steelers prepare for a Sunday night clash with the New York Giants, where Daniel Jones faces his own questions after another punishing, multi-sack performance. Could this weekend reshape the playoff picture as we know it?
Email Fred and the Fantastics with questions and comments at sportsfred@aol.com
Hey everybody, it’s that time again, Fred and the Fantastics on PodClips and BLEAV
around the world with Art Sorce and Laura Snoke, and we’ll talk about this, that, and
anything in sports. And of course now the World Series, and we’re taping this on Friday
right now at 1 p.m. Pacific Time. In four hours the World Series begins.
Laura Snoke, you’ve been a Dodger fan forever.
Who might win the World Series?
Well, of course, the Dodgers are going to win the World Series.
Actually, Randy Johnson came out and said the Dodgers are going to win the World Series.
I think it’s going to be a very close game.
I mean, a very close series.
It’s interesting, Randy Johnson said he thought the Dodgers are going to win the World Series,
but that they were going to lose tonight.
I don’t think so.
I think they’re going to win tonight.
I think Flaherty’s got something to prove tonight after his kind of disastrous, um, last –
Well, you’ve got two Southern California phenoms on the mound, Gerrit Cole for the
Yankees and of course Flaherty for the Dodgers.
Uh, you’re, you’re having, this is the 12th time these two teams over the
myriad of years have met for the championship.
It’s eight-three Yankees lead the series.
The last time the Dodgers won I believe was ’81 and if you look at their records this year,
you know the Yankees were 94 and 68, the Dodgers were 98 and 64.
You’ve got, what, three to four MVPs in this series?
I mean it is just it’s a Major League Baseball extravaganza, a bi-coastal high media area
World Series.
I just think it’s going to be a dandy series, and I think the team that gets the best starting
pitching has the best chance to win, and right now, for me, and I hate to say this, being
an old Dodger fan, I think the Yankees might have an edge in the starting pitching department.
I think they do have an edge in starting pitching, but I think the Dodgers have an
edge in their lineup.
I agree with both of you. Dodgers are 130-135 favorite with the Yankees and that just because
of the home-field advantage if it goes to seven. Let me say this. If Glasnow was still
pitching, I think the Dodgers would win.
In five or six games.
I agree.
I have no opinion. They went through 18 starting pitchers this year. Something’s going on.
We talked about this a million times. You can’t go through 18 starting pitchers, 18
pitchers, and about 18 starting pitchers. And I don’t know how many other pitchers that they’ve gone through.
But, but you can’t go through –
Fred, let me ask you a question. Is Freddie Freeman’s ankle
okay? I mean, it was this like week off that he had is
if you heard a thing for many of your friends in the
Dodger organization?
Yeah, I heard he’s not 100%.
But still.
But even if he were, Cole would have to be, in my mind, a slight favorite over Flaherty.
How about Vesia? Is Vesia going to be on the roster and Graterol? Because they’re kind of iffy.
Graterol made it. Rojas made it. They took Evan Phillips off the roster.
Really?
Yeah. So, and I’m not quite sure why. You know, he’s gone like 15 innings now in the postseason
without giving up a run. So I’m-
I just can’t wait to see Ohtani hit in Yankee Stadium with that short porch and right.
Uh, what about Vesia’s roster?
I’m sorry, go ahead.
I’m sorry, Vesia didn’t make the roster.
Who?
Vesia.
Yeah, he did.
He did, oh.
They added Vesia, so now they have two lefty relievers.
That’s good.
I listen to WFAN because I want to hear the other side, right?
And to them, the pressure is on Aaron Judge to prove that the 50 home runs, or the 62 in the other
year, means a lot. They basically are saying you don’t want a championship. You don’t win a world
series in baseball. You’re not going to be thought of as one of those fabled Yankees.
You know, and Fred, they’ve given him a lot of trouble in the New York Post about his
postseason lack of success.
But then you look at a guy like Stanton, who just like, I mean, he steps up at big moments.
And I mean, I look at, I look at Mookie Betts and I look at, you know, Shohei Ohtani.
I mean, and even Max Muncie who’s red hot right now coming off the NLCS.
It’s just an amazing, amazing series full of superstars.
And I’m wondering if a guy like Tommy Edman
or, or, one or Gleyber Torres or one of the guys that really
aren’t considered superstars aren’t going to you know have
like the the Bobby Richardson-type World Series and steal all the thunder.
Art, I gotta ask you a question. You’re in Pennsylvania.
Game time for you. Friday night. Again, folks were taping this at 1 o’clock Pacific 4 o’clock.
Speaking of that, what about the traffic in LA tonight with the, the, they got a basketball
game, a USC football game, and on the Harbor freeway, you have the World Series.
How are they, that’s called Carmageddon!
Well, I’m not getting anywhere near there, but let me state, I got a dentist
appointment, thankfully, which I’ve never said in my life.
Bottom, bottom line.
Eight o’clock, eight o’clock Eastern time for the World Series,
11 o’clock for your Trojans of SC against Rutgers.
Now, I don’t know if you’re going to tell us the truth Artie, Awaken or not Awaken,
are you going to be able to sit through six hours, starting at eight o’clock your time
to watch post the World Series?
And I have a tee time, you know, tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.
So that gives you an idea that the Trojans are going to be taped.
And I might not have, I might not make it through the Dodger game as well.
But I mean, I was looking at the schedule and I’m like, Oh my God, I mean, how are these people?
How are these people going to do it in LA with three huge events on one night? That’s crazy.
Laura, are you going to be able to make it now?
It’s five o’clock your time Pacific on this and the SC game will start at eight.
Are you going to be able to watch both the baseball and the football?
Yeah, sure. Absolutely. Yeah.
Fred, will you help us raise some money? We need $95 million to get rid of Lincoln Riley.
How did that happen?
I’m just saying whoever did that contract, I mean, it looked really
good in the very beginning, but my God, a buyout of $95 million. You might as well
keep the guy for the next three years and pray that, you know, he learns, as the gig goes along.
Because, I mean, the last four games have really scared a lot of Trojan fans.
And I’m sure the Bruins are roaring now.
They beat Rutgers last week.
They’re going to be happy.
Let me state this about both clubs.
Both clubs who have lost games late, close games late, played not to lose in the latter part of the games.
You can’t do that. We’ve talked about that a million times.
You have to be aggressive. You know, you say, oh, I’ve got like UCLA at 35 points
leading Rutgers 35-18. Next thing you know it’s 35-32 and you know Rutgers had a shot to win.
Remember the old joke that Hank Stram talks about? He said you know they said what about
the pre-vent defense? He goes oh you mean the defense that prevents you from winning?
Oh, that’s great.
All right, okay we’re going to take a one-minute break here and come back with a whole lot more on Fred and the Fantastics.
All right everybody back on Fred and the Fantastics heard on PodClips and BLEAV
around the world. We’ll talk about this, that, and anything in sports.
Attorney Laura Snoke with us, uh, uh, Awaken taker, uh, Art Sorce, uh, at 127 years of age with us.
Let’s talk about a couple of games in the National Football League.
What about the Bears in Washington?
It was going to be the matchup of the first and second-round draft picks,
and it still will be because it’s just a few years back.
We have Marcus Mariota playing for Jayden Daniels and the spread went
from, I believe Washington was favored by two and a half and
now they’re underdogs by two and a half.
That’s going to be a heck of a ball game.
Marietta played well last week.
I thought he did.
So, uh, but are we a hundred percent sure that, uh, Daniels is not going to play?
Yeah. He took a shot in the rib.
And you remember when Troy Polamalu took that shot that one time back in
college, and I guess they hit a nerve or something.
And so the latest I heard as of this morning, Jayden Daniels will not be playing.
It’s going to be Mariota starting. But hey, Caleb Williams had a big game in London.
You know, I look at that ball game and I got to tell you, the Bears defense is playing great.
The tight end is looking good. The Bears, you know, that whole division now with Minnesota
getting beat last week and of course, Hutchinson down for the Lions, that NFC
see, uh, north is, is going to be one heck of a division. You got the Packers in there too.
Laura, tell me the truth.
When Jared Goff played for the Rams, did you think he’d ever play as
well as he’s playing now for Detroit?
No, he’s sitting over 80% of his passes.
No, he’s, he’s playing great.
I, you know, it just goes to show you, I like, we were talking about the Vikings game.
And I just think it’s such a great story with Sam Darnold and how it just goes to
show you that, that it’s not so much how much talent a player has, but it also
has to do with the big picture who’s surrounding the player, what system
they’re in, whether the coach plays to their strengths or has his own system
and doesn’t care what the strengths of the players are.
Matt, Matt Stafford looked like a kid last night when he had Dekua and Cooper
Kupp back. It looked like a completely different football team.
He did.
And I mean, you just saw the smile on Mattie Stafford’s face.
And, you know, I had just read a rumor that, you know, they were going to,
they were going to get rid of Cooper Kupp and he and Cooper Kupp and Nacua
on the sidelines were giggling like little kids.
Hey, the Rams have a legitimate chance in the NFC West now.
I mean, I looked at their next four games on the schedule and, and I got to tell you
what the 49ers playing the way they’re playing and Seattle having a few problems right now.
Sean McVay looks like he’s got the inside lane in a racetrack.
He might be a few for a long back, but I think the Rams have a real good chance
to go to the playoffs
And Seattle has a tough game on Sunday with the Bills. So, yeah.
You mentioned the 49ers. You lose Aiyuk now for the season. Now here’s a
guy who’s arguing about his contract until a couple weeks before the season
begins. Then he gets hurt. Then he gets hurt so badly that he’s out for the
season. Deebo Samuel’s gonna miss some time.
McCaffrey’s not back yet. Kittle’s 50-50, so it’s gonna be very, very intriguing.
You know my nickname for Kittle, right?
What?
Brittle Kittle.
I thought Deebo was just sick.
No, he’s got walking pneumonia. He was actually in the hospital.
Yeah, but that, he should recover from that. I mean, that’s not a season-ending situation. Well, not season-ending.
This 127-year-old, a long time to recover. I had it for about a month there. But then again,
I’m not 26 years of age either.
All right. So last week, the Jets score and lead Pittsburgh 15 to 6 and then Aaron Ego,
Aaron Rodgers throws a pass where there were three Steelers and one Jet.
I didn’t hear one of the receivers blame Aaron Rodgers for the loss.
Now they’re at the Patriots.
You could make the case that Cleveland or the Patriots are the two worst teams in the National Football League,
do you think the Jets can beat the Patriots on the road?
Art, what do you think?
I wonder if he’s going to throw any passes to Mike Williams. That’s my question.
I mean, after throwing him under the bus, I mean, you know, it might be a coming out party for Davante.
You know, this could be his chance and, you know, if the Jets don’t do it now, they’re done.
I mean, and I personally think at two and five, they have quite a road to hoe
as it is, and uh but yeah I I don’t think there’s a whole lot you know in Jared Mayo’s ball club
there, so yeah I would have to think if you’re ever gonna see a Jets victory it’s gonna be this Sunday.
Laura uh the Jets at the Patriots, Aaron Ego, Aaron Rodgers, are they gonna win?
Uh, you know, I think the bigger question is, why do we care? I mean, I don’t think
either one of those teams is going anywhere. Um, uh, I don’t, I don’t quite understand
Aaron Rogers, you know, what, what,
Can I say something? You know, strategically, I’m not a quarterback coach, but I was around a lot of great quarterback
coaches over the years. And when I noticed him in the in the films and in
the games, is he’s falling backwards throwing passes.
Yes.
And I’ve never, I mean, he used to do it on the dump-off passes to the running backs and that
which is fine. But on passes down the field, falling backwards is not the way to fundamentally throw a football.
But then I was watching the quarterbacks,
It’s not the way to fundamentally throw a ball, period.
Yeah, the Achilles tendon and or the hamstring.
Could it be the ankle or the hamstring and he doesn’t have the strength. That’s true. Yeah so it’s hard to say.
All right one final question about the NFL. In Pittsburgh they made a decision and I wasn’t sure why.
Russell Wilson started barely slowly again down 15 to 6 and then they scored all the points
after that. Is Wilson the answer, Art in Pittsburgh with Mike Tomlin?
You know, Mike Tomlin is an interesting character when it comes to those kind of decisions.
All along, he wanted to see what Justin Fields was all about. And I think Justin Fields
accorded himself quite well. He won four of the six games he was in, had a great game
in Vegas before he got sat down on the bench. But I think the whole way,
Mike Tomlin wanted Russell Wilson to be the guy. I think it’s the experience.
I mean, he remembers watching him in Seattle for all the great years.
And Fred, you and I were huge Russell Wilson fans as well.
So I think from that perspective,
I think that’s one of the reasons why they did what they did.
I still think that, you know, in a long NFL season, the way it is,
having two good quarterbacks is a brilliant way to go.
I would somehow find a way to get the athletic ability of Justin Fields in the game somehow,
you know, whether you’re going to do a maybe a reverse pass or a punt return or a kickoff return,
find a way to use his great talents as a runner. And then that’s how I view it.
But yeah, I think he’s made a decision that, that Russell Wilson having been to a couple of Super Bowls
and won one, should have won two, nice call by you, Pete Carroll on the goal line when you have Skittles behind you there.
But the point I’m seeing is I think he thinks this year with his great defense and you know
maybe, maybe, the, the lack of turnovers that Russell Wilson brings might be the answer.
That’s what I’m thinking. Laura, you have a quick opinion on that?
I was actually surprised that he chose Russell Wilson.
I thought he’d go with Justin Fields, but Justin Fields played pretty well before.
But I guess he picked Russell Wilson to be the starter at the beginning of the season.
And so he’s sticking with that decision. We’ll see how it plays out.
Who’s Pittsburgh playing this weekend?
The New York Giants, Monday Night Football.
And are they going after Danny Dimes?
You wouldn’t believe on WFAN. It’s, it’s like blank believable.
And Fred I mean I hate to say this, but you know I saw,
I’ve seen him actually improve over the last three years and I mean he gets racked up pretty well.
He got sacked seven times.
That’s what I’m saying it’s hard to throw the ball from your keister, I mean that’s just the
reality of that whole situation.
All right Art the final 30 seconds, final thoughts.
Hey great weekend in sports, if you’re a TV fan you’ve got the NBA,
college football, you’ve got the NFL, you’ve got pro golf from all over the planet.
I mean everything is going on at once, hockey if you’re a hockey fan, so
all I could say is enjoy yourself and don’t eat too much candy, it’s not good for you.
You have no thoughts about Arnold Palmer?
Well you know he was he was quite an amazing athlete.
I don’t want to take a shower with him either.
That’s a little inside humor here at PodClips and BLEAV and Fred and the Fantastics.
Laura, 30 seconds, final thoughts.
Just looking forward to the World Series,
looking forward to the Dodgers winning the World Series.
Finally having a parade in Los Angeles.
2020 we had both our teams win championships
and no parade and, and cardboard fans.
I love that, cardboard fans!
So it’s exciting to see real fans in the stands.
And, uh, if you’re in your car in LA right now, just be patient, everybody.
‘Cause it’s going to be tough slamming if you’re running around the Harbor Freeway tonight.
Folks, it’s 1:20 Pacific Time, game starts at 5:08 – leave now.
No matter where you are in Southern California. For Art, for Laura, for Mario, I’m Fred.
Stay tuned for a whole lot more of Fred and the Fantastics. Bye, everybody.
