Lee Jay Berman became a full-time Los Angeles mediator 30 years ago and has since mediated over 3,000 cases. He is an International Academy of Mediators’ Distinguished Fellow and a National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (NADN) Charter Diplomate. As an AAA Master Mediator panelist for employment matters and on AAA’s national roster for commercial and construction disputes, he trains mediators through the American Institute of Mediation locally and around the world.

In this episode, Lee Jay and Len discuss an escalating dispute between neighbors, owners of adjoining beach properties, which had devolved into issues and behaviors unrelated to the initial problem.  Neighbor disputes can take many forms and can have a variety of causes.  Solutions require effective communication and collaborative approaches.  Listen to one of the thought leaders in mediation, to whom other mediators have looked for guidance on how to change the dialogue of dispute into effective, problem-solving communication.

Lee Jay Berman founded the American Institute of Mediation after seven years as Director of Pepperdine Law School’s Mediating the Litigated Case program (ranked #1 nationally). The Southern California Mediation Association (SCMA) awarded Lee Jay their L. Randolph Lowry Award for his success in educating others. He has trained mediators, judges, attorneys, and business leaders across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe, as well as in India, Dubai, Uzbekistan, Australia, and New Zealand. The National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals (NADN) named him their inaugural “Distinguished Neutral of the Year” in 2017.

Lee Jay is very much in demand as a mediator and has gained a reputation for his knowledge of the mediation process and his ability to apply that knowledge to creative ways of resolving complex, highly contentious, and emotional disputes. His YouTube channel is filled with dozens of podcast interviews, and he has published numerous articles on mediation and ADR. The American Bar Association published two of his books in 2022.
