UCLA’s undefeated start faces its stiffest test Saturday at Oregon, where coach Bob Chesney’s Bruins are roughly 11½-point underdogs to the talented Ducks. Can Chesney’s team survive a road trip to Eugene after a schedule short on ranked opponents? Is the Bruins’ record a sign of real progress or a soft landing? USC visits Penn State for a white-out night, a matchup that could turn on the Trojans’ ground game against a Nittany Lions defense that has struggled to stop the run. Can the Trojans repeat the formula after a narrow win over Washington? A possible Category 4 hurricane threatens Alabama’s trip to Georgia, where the Bulldogs are favored over the Crimson Tide. Will the game kick off as scheduled, or will organizers move it up to beat the storm?
The NFL’s Sunday slate features a marquee NFC West showdown in Seattle. Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers have yet to allow a sack, but the Seahawks hold home-field advantage and slight favorite status. Has San Francisco’s unbeaten-looking résumé been padded by an easy schedule? Sean Payton reportedly reclaims play-calling duties from Davis Webb in Denver as the Broncos, 3½-point favorites, host a winless Chargers team. Can Bo Nix’s offense take off under Payton’s direction? Will Justin Herbert finally get Los Angeles off the schneid, or does a 0-5 start look imminent?
The Dodgers return home for three straight games in the postseason’s 2-3-2 format, and most predictions favor a title run toward a three-peat, with Milwaukee as the likeliest obstacle. Can the Brewers steal the first two at home and pull off an upset? Does the format give the home team too big an edge? An even bigger question hovers over Shohei Ohtani, who has played so brilliantly in the first half, yet has had trouble keeping up lately. Is fatigue from years of deep October runs catching up to him? Should baseball consider a shorter regular season and longer playoff series?

Hey everybody, it’s that time again. Fred and the Fantastics on BLEAV and on PodClips. Anything and everything in sports, and a little bit more, along with Art Sorce, at 129 years of age; Laura Snoke, who still wants to play basketball on the collegiate level, and maybe she’ll get her eligibility back; and with Mark Mancini, who’s very, very sharp tonight on Sports Overnight America, so see what he does this afternoon, right here on Fred and the Fantastics on BLEAV and on PodClips. You can email us at [email protected], [email protected]. All right, Art, you’re a Bruin fan; growing up, you kicked for the Trojans. They’re at Penn State on Saturday night. Who do you like? Penn State off the loss? USC off the fortunate win over Washington? Who do you like?
I like, I like the Trojans, only because they can run the ball. And that seems to be the weakness of Penn State. But it is a white-out game. I will be there; it’s gonna be fantastic, the weather’s gonna be marvelous. But I’ll tell you, the game that really intrigues me, Fred, is the Oregon-UCLA game. Bob Chesney, I did a deep dive, and I’m gonna tell you something: this guy is one hell of a football coach. And he learned a lot from his dad; he’s from a little town in Pennsylvania. A lot of these football coaches, you know, you look at the Indiana head coach, Cignetti, another PA native, it seems to be in the water, somehow. But I think he’s gonna be up against it a little bit with this Oregon ball club. Because whether they play Moore or Raiola, they both look good to me, and I think, I really think the Ducks are gonna win by 16 to 24 in that, in that game.
Right now, as we check on Friday afternoon, they’re 11 and 1/2 point favorites. Laura, who do you like in Eugene – UCLA undefeated against the once-defeated Oregon Ducks?
I think Oregon’s gonna win, unfortunately. I just think they have too much talent for UCLA, especially in Eugene. I think it’s gonna be a close game. I don’t think it’s gonna be a blowout, but I think Oregon’s gonna win the game. I’d like to see UCLA win, of course.
But I think your point is well taken; UCLA really has not defeated anybody of note. Mark, UCLA at Oregon, Oregon’s 11-point, 11 and 1/2 point favorite.
Well, Artie and I got this thing going all the way till the end of the year, he’s got Joey Chestnut at UCLA, and I got John Harbaugh over at, you know, the New York Giants. So we’re running neck and neck. But his train’s gonna come to a screeching halt, because you’re not gonna go to Oregon and beat Oregon, believe me. That is gonna be a 35-point whipping.
Again, folks, we’re taping this Friday afternoon; on Saturday, supposedly Alabama’s at Georgia, but the rains, torrential, maybe. Art, you think they’re gonna play that game?
I’ll let you in on a secret: I think Georgia’s the best team in college football. I don’t know what’s going on with it; it’s hard to pronounce that Hurricane, I-S-I-A-A, I guess,
I know, I was trying to pronounce it.
But, ISIAIS? I don’t know. It’s awfully rough, but I was working on it too, and I just, I didn’t wanna touch it. But the bottom line I’m saying is: Is Kirby Smart against Kalen De Boer? I like Kalen De Boer; I loved him when he was at Washington, what he accomplished there. But they seem a little soft; they do have speed at wide receiver. But this is an all-around thumper, a good football team, in the Bulldogs of Georgia. If they play, Georgia by 10.
Laura, what do you think? You think they’re gonna, you think they’re gonna play A and B? Have you seen either Georgia or Alabama play so far this season?
I, I think I saw a little bit of Alabama playing somebody; I don’t remember, but I think, I don’t think it’s gonna go. I mean, I think that hurricane’s supposed to, supposed to hit a Category Four. I think, so with the I-Hurricane, whatever, however you pronounce it, I-C-AS, C-C or something. Yeah, I’d be surprised if that game goes on. I mean, but we’ll see.
Have they thought about moving it up a little bit, or, or doing something of that nature? Because I know it’s slated for 7:30 Eastern time, maybe they could move it up to, like, noon or something and try to get her in.
Hey Laura, I gotta ask you a question. Art just mentioned something: the change of time. You indicated that last weekend, you guys, you and your husband Ed, were gonna go to the Dodger game, and then it was 100 degrees, so you sold your tickets. Now, I’ve never sold a ticket in my life. How did you sell your ticket physically, or do you do it? How, how do you sell a ticket that quickly nowadays, in 2026?
You sell a ticket and take a bath.
No, but how do you get it to the other person?
You know, it’s such a racket, right? I mean, you buy these tickets online, and they tell you you can sell them, but then, when you start, when you try to sell them, they keep trying to tell you you’re, you’re charging too much. When seats that are really next to what your seats are, and what you paid for, are selling for more than you paid for? So, I mean, you just, you all,
It’s just like those card collectors, you guys.
You know, a friend of mine, a friend of mine says, you know, what you really ought to do is you ought to just buy tickets at the last minute, if you don’t care whether you can go or not, because that’s when you get the best deals. And I learned this firsthand by trying to sell these tickets.
I’ll give you a perfect example: USC.
We lost money.
Man, that, that’s gonna be right.
USC and Penn State, they wanted $550 per seat, $550; they lose a couple games, and a game for USC, now their seats are $75.
Yeah, I mean, it’s just crazy.
We should do a show on things, things that don’t make sense, because I got a bill, and I’m not even 65 yet, and they bill you three months in advance for Medicare. What kind of crap is that?
The United States of America, 2026.
You know, for those of us who are over 65, they just, they just tacked on the drug plan under Medicare, the prescription drug plan. If you don’t renew it, there’s a huge penalty that you have to pay every year until you die. I mean, it’s just.
I’m looking over my, Fred, I’m looking over my left shoulder to see if my wife’s around, because I came up with a new sign, you know how they have them signs, Will Work for Food? I’m gonna have one that says, Will Work for a Rich, Rich Woman.
All right, come back with a little bit more Fred and the Fantastics on BLEAV and on PodClips, right after this.
Hey, we’re back on Fred and the Fantastics, with Laura, with Art, Mark, and with you. You can email us, [email protected], [email protected]. National Football League on Sunday, a biggie, of course: San Francisco and Seattle. Art, who do you like? Seattle? San Francisco?
Brock Purdy, to me, Brock Purdy has just been the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a lotta time. I mean, Kyle Shanahan’s – they’re simpatico in their play calling; the offensive line hasn’t given up a sack all year. You know, Seattle’s talented. What’s, what are the numbers in that game, Fred? What are, what are, what are the 49ers?
Seattle’s a slight favorite.
I’ll take, I’ll take the 49ers to the points.
Laura?
Are they playing in Seattle? That’s why Seattle’s a favorite.
Yeah, they’re, they’re about,
They get the home field advantage. It’s gonna be a really tough game. I mean, it’s gonna be close, I think. I think it’s gonna be a great game. I think San Francisco’s gonna, I don’t know, it’s gonna be close. I don’t know, I wouldn’t bet on it.
Mark, you have any thoughts about San Francisco, the 49ers, at the Seahawks?
I think the 49ers are overrated. I’ve said it before; I’m not a big fan of those guys. Shanahan can’t win big games. I like Seattle in this game, I really do; it’s in Seattle. I know the, the 49ers are trying to avenge this last playoff loss to them or something, so,
They’re playing running back for Seattle.
Well, but who has San Francisco beaten this year? They played Miami, Arizona; they played Denver; there was another team they beat up on.
Denver’s a pretty good football team that they beat.
Their schedule’s been like the Pittsburgh Panthers; the Panthers are 5-0, but they haven’t really played anybody.
It’s gonna be a great game.
All right, the Broncos, Broncos 2-2, the Chargers 0-4; We kidded before that they could lose their first nine, and I think they’re gonna lose this one too. The Broncos, about a 3 and 1/2 point favorite on the road. Art, who do you like?
Well, since Sean Payton’s gonna be back to calling the plays, which I had never understood why he’d ever not call the plays – that’s what he does best; he’s awesome at that, you know, nothing against Davis Webb. But, you know, when you have Sean Payton and all that experience, and you have a quarterback like Bo Nix and the receivers they have, I think Denver’s ready to explode, and I really like them in this game, in this situation.
Laura, the Chargers 0-4, do they go 0-5?
I do. I think they will. Yeah, I think Denver’s gonna be, beat the Chargers. Chargers looked horrible. I mean, they just, they’re another San Diego, you know, transplant that never does any good in LA. It’s the curse of the San Diego transplant.
What?
So if they’re gonna, they’re using a drone,
So, Laura,
The Chargers and the Clippers. They have no fans.
Laura,
Sorry.
If they use a drone, if they use a drone, should it be on LA or San Diego?
Oh, that’s a, that’s a political comment I like. That was pretty funny.
Mark.
They’re gonna take out the teams, San Diego and LA.
Well, I don’t know if Laura and Art, I don’t know if they’re wearing them peace T-shirts, but I’m gonna go against the trend. I like Harbaugh. I like Herbert. I got a good friend that really likes him.
Friend?
She said he’s the best-looking quarterback. I think the Chargers have been snake-bitten here. They get their first win of the year. They beat Denver.
I would like them to beat Denver.
Call your bookie, Fred.
All right.
Let’s talk a little bit of baseball before we say good afternoon right here on Fred and The Fantastics on BLEAV and on PodClips. Who wins the whole thing? You can change from last week. Art, who wins the entire Magilla, who wins the whole thing, the World Series?
The Magilla Gorilla is gonna be in Los Angeles for the third year in a row.
Laura, who wins the, Laura, who wins the whole thing?
I agree. The Dodgers are gonna win it all, and they’re gonna beat Milwaukee in six.
Mark, who wins the whole thing?
Well, every time I get up in the morning, I usually do the sign of the cross, and I go, Oh, shoot, now I gotta face this whole Dodger Nation on TikTok or any social media platform. But you know what? I’m gonna keep riding them out, and I’m gonna go with the Brewers. I think they learned their lesson last year. They take the Dodgers out in six. The first two, they win in Milwaukee. They let the Dodgers breathe a little, take 2 out of 3 here, and then they end it. Which Toronto should’ve ended it last year. They ended at home in Milwaukee.
You know, the Dodgers did pretty well against Milwaukee this season. Last year, they, Milwaukee shut them out before they, before they played them in the postseason. But this year, I think they were four and three against Milwaukee this year.
You know, Laura, I don’t take the, the regular season serious against the postseason in any case, but let me make this point. The 2-3-2 thing, I think, puts a major advantage to the team at home, not just the extra game. Yeah. It’s tough to win three straight games at home. And now that, the way it’s set up now, the Dodgers have Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week at home. I’d rather have it; they don’t wanna spend the dough, but would they rather have it? I’d rather have it 2-2,1-1 and 1. And I think that would put more strain on, on, on the team with the.
Hey, how about those White Sox, you guys? How about those White Sox?
Okay, that’s the, that’s the, that’s the question. On Thursday night, White Sox against Cleveland, and the Monday night and the Thursday night football game going on. Art, what did you watch more? The baseball game in the postseason or the regular season NFL?
Uh, after watching Dallas try to play that game for about 10 minutes, I switched right over, and I watched the White Sox and the Cleveland Guardians do their thing, the Harry Guardinos. And I, it was, what, what really bothered me, Fred, was why? With a 9-4 lead, would you put your two best relievers in there when you gotta play a game five Saturday with, I mean, I, did, did you understand what they were doing there?
No.
Well, I’ll tell you what I did. I had my 10-cent beer night from ’74 on the Cleveland Indians. And I was taking the records out, and I was hoping Bill Veeck would be somewhere in Comiskey Park. And I was getting ready to throw my records on the field. Disco Night. So I had the best of both worlds last night.
Laura, did you watch both games, or did you watch one game more than the other?
I, I watched the football game. Um. And then I switched to, uh, we’ve been watching a show on, on Prime called, um, A Place to Call Home. It’s kind of an old show. It was from Acorn. And it’s kind of soapy, but it’s really good, and we’re just hooked on it. So I ended up, we ended up watching a couple of episodes of that last night. I forgot about the Chicago game, or I would have watched that. I just forgot about it.
All right. So Sunday night, the Dodgers, if the Dodgers play at 5 o’clock and the NFL game’s going at 5 o’clock. You’re watching the Dodger game, right?
Absolutely.
Absolutely. Without question. I think they’re both on, they’re both on, what do, what do they, on your TV, which is, I don’t even understand what that means, linear. But I mean, I know what linear means. I don’t understand the context. But they’re both, so we can toggle at least a little bit, right?
Well, what, Fred?
Definitely on the Dodger game.
I’m trying to get ready for Halloween, dressing up as Bernie Brewer. I just need to put a slide near my TV, cause every time the Brewers hit a home run, they come down the slide.
They don’t hit many.
What do you guys think is going on with Ohtani? Do you think it’s injuries or what? Or, you know, he’s stuck. I mean, the first half of the season, he was incredible. I mean, he had like a 1.7 ERA. He was batting over .300.
I have a theory. Can I tell you my theory?
Yeah, that’s what I was asking.
You know how LeBron James played all those playoff games, year after year after year? Ohtani’s been doing the same thing now for a long time. Okay, since he’s been with the Dodgers, they’re, they’re playing a lot of extra games. I think he’s worn down. I think he’s physically; which is another reason why I like this idea of a 154-game season in a seven-game division series, as opposed to these three-game series and five-game series. I think less is more. Give these guys a better chance to, you know, what is it called? Load management?
Fred, will my Milwaukee Bucks have a better record than you and Laura’s Los Angeles Lakers?
The Lakers aren’t gonna win 35 games. So if you can win more than 35, you’re gonna,
Lakers are clearly gonna win 35 games.
Laura, Laura, they can’t guard you.
I say 32.
We’ll see.
Reaves and Dončić on the court at the same time.
I give it to Elgin Baylor. I give it to Elgin Baylor, a head fake. And they’d all be up in the air in the,
Dončić looks pretty darn good.
I’m sorry, what was that, Mark?
Dončić looks pretty darn good.
Yeah, offensively, he’s not gonna guard you. Yeah. And if they’re both playing at the same time, as they will, 30, 30 minutes a game.
Well, I will tell you, the 76ers will be on 45 times this year.
Oh, but, but by the way, before we go, before we go,
And so will the Knicks.
By the way, by the way, before we go, this is not sports, but it is linear versus digital. The Emmy Awards, starting next September, will be on Prime. Laura, any comments?
No, but I hear the Super Bowl is gonna be streaming in a couple of years.
Soon. But the Emmys are gonna be on Prime. Now, you’re not gonna have to pay for Prime, they’re gonna, they’re gonna give you that one free. But that’s basically an advertisement. So you buy,
Okay, I got a question for you guys.
But one thing about Prime, though.
Watch CNN and HBO. Have you noticed any change at CBS or CNN in, in terms of how they’re broadcasting, and, you know, left versus right and things of that nature?
CBS clearly has changed. I mean, certainly, and 60 Minutes, it’s changed. But I think that, um, I think the thing about Prime is that you can buy, you can buy, you can pay for one game or one show. I think you don’t have to subscribe. They have, like, it’s like a pay-per-view thing. So at least it’s not like Netflix or the other ones where you have to be a subscriber.
How long till we get Peacock Plus?
They raised the price.
I have Peacock Plus.
I think they raised the price to $10.99 or $12.99.
It’s self-indulgent.
That’s crazy with this cable and everything.
Every time I have a fight with my husband, I get a new,
Oh, I like that concept.
No, I, I just don’t like,
I’m gonna spend on this.
I just don’t like the fact that when we were growing up, 2, 4, ABC, NBC, CBS, and the Emmys and the Oscars on that. And now they’re going to digital and, and Prime, and some people don’t even know how to get Prime, and it’s,
You know, it’s the future. You can’t stop progress.
Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Laura.
They have to get rid of the antitrust laws.
Laura.
If they’re gonna do this, they,
I think people are, are starting to wise up. I think you’re right, Fred, to the point where people are gonna look for bargains. And if they don’t, they’re just not gonna subscribe to some of these things.
Laura, you can, you can definitely stop progress. No. 47 has done that. All right, for Mark, for Art, for Laura.
He’s trying, but he can’t, ultimately, can’t stop progress.
Thank you guys very much for listening to Fred and The Fantastics on BLEAV and PodClips. Back with more down the road. Bye, everybody.
